Heart disease runs in my family. I lost my father to a major heart attack when he was only 39 years old. Not only was this a devastating, life-altering experience for me - I was scared that I too would suffer the same fate. At the age of 13 I turned into a strict vegetarian, and cut out all dairy, meats and animal products from my diet. I thought by becoming a vegetarian it would lessen the risk of heart disease - little did I know the harm I was actually doing myself at such a crucial age when I needed proper fats and proteins to grow.
